As many Instagram nail artists have demonstrated, the best marble patterns are ones that feature no set color path. Manicurist Rachel Messick explained how the design comes together, telling NYLON, "Marble nails are an exercise in layering color and opacity to create the illusion of depth. I will typically start with a milky tint as my base color and use a combo of sparkles and jelly colors to create depth and a super pigmented white to create the veins."
If you have short ones or are guilty of biting them, never fear, you can still have long, stylish nails using dip powders. All you need to do is add tips. The process is very similar to adding length for acrylic or gel nails. The natural nails are shaped and buffed; then, the tip is glued on. The great thing about choosing tips is you can pick any style you want. There are more natural shapes such as round and oval, or go all out and pick a coffin, stiletto, or lipstick shape. Once the glue is dried, the tip is filed and blended with the natural nail. Then a couple of coats of clear powder are added to smooth out the shape and add thickness and durability. After that’s complete, you can continue as usual, with whatever colors your heart desires.
For extremely small spaces, softer, more elegant lighting works best. “A play of mirror paired with ambient lighting can create an illusion of more space and can also add to the bling,” aver Shah & Patwardhan.
Looking for a fun, supercreative nail-art DIY to occupy more time spent at home? Well, you might not believe it, but you can use plastic wrap to create a marble- or crystal-look manicure in a few steps. It might take a little bit of practice, and you definitely require a few pieces of equipment aside from the plastic wrap, but who doesn't love a good beauty hack, right?

“Because at-home DIY manicures are very much a thing right now, people are also opting for pretty neutrals that are a little more forgiving to apply.”
Acrylic nails can be especially beneficial to those with shorter nails. "Using acrylics can be a nice way to add length to your nails, which you cannot do with regular polish," says Jessica Tong, nail artist and Smith & Cult Brand Ambassador in San Francisco. Tong is a fan of at-home acrylic nails but warns that patience is definitely required: "Practice is needed to perfect a medium like acrylic," she says. "It was the hardest skill I learned in nail school." Tong recommends practicing with false or press-on nails a few times to get the hang of it before you try it on your own nails. "If it doesn’t come out perfect the first time, it’s okay," she says.
Bring some festive cheer to your fingers during the holiday season with a fun red Christmas design. Select something simple such as bright red glitter, which will also see you through to your New Year’s Eve party. Mix a little bit of gold dusting into a classic red nail for a luxe look, or get your nail tech to paint some snowflakes on with a fine-tipped brush. Alternatively, you can do a Christmas inspired ombre combination, perhaps mixing red and green, or red and silver for an elegant and unique style.
Small rooms can often make the biggest impact. These include powder rooms, which are often utilitarian in function but offer much creative opportunity—such petite bathrooms are often the best opportunities to make a great visual impression on your house guests.
Metta advises: "For one-off nail extensions or overlays, it’s best to go for a soak-off solution that can be easily removed."
