"I think anything glittery, shiny, and big can easily be overdone, which leads to people thinking it's tacky," says Brittney Boyce, a consulting nail artist for Orly. "If you look at fashion, black and white along with muted colors are always seen as 'chic,' so the opposite of that gets labeled as loud and cheesy. Plus, I think millennials associate glitter to the late '90s/early 2000s, with raves, butterfly hairclips, and tons of tacky scented rainbow body glitter that you can never fully wash off."

Mani Bootcamp’s goal is to help us non-professionals become bona fide pros after the first week and move our way up to more advanced skills in weeks two and three. Week one is basically manicuring 101, introducing the basics and practicing the “art of painting.” Week two will introduce nail accents, teaching us how to do ombré and apply sticker adornments without destroying the polish underneath. But a few months ago, my Instagram explore page started filling with this seemingly simple do-it-yourself nail process (likely a result of longingly scrolling through nail design pages) called polygel.
I will say that I made them a little too thick my first time. I could have thinned them out a bit in the mold before applying because a little goes a long way. The biggest lift for me was the filing. I’d recommend investing in an electric nail file to help with shaping. And you’ll probably need it for removal too. This process was made to last and you can definitely tell when you’re doing it.
