Acrylic nails can be especially beneficial to those with shorter nails. "Using acrylics can be a nice way to add length to your nails, which you cannot do with regular polish," says Jessica Tong, nail artist and Smith & Cult Brand Ambassador in San Francisco. Tong is a fan of at-home acrylic nails but warns that patience is definitely required: "Practice is needed to perfect a medium like acrylic," she says. "It was the hardest skill I learned in nail school." Tong recommends practicing with false or press-on nails a few times to get the hang of it before you try it on your own nails. "If it doesn’t come out perfect the first time, it’s okay," she says.

Even though many of us aren’t getting the chance to be seen by anyone outside of your household due to lockdown measures, we still want to look good. It’s only human. Getting my nails done with Japanese gel at one of the few New York salons that specialize in the technique was part of my monthly beauty ritual. But now, as nail salons are still shut down in many states, and those that are open probably aren’t with the risk, I mostly accepted my hands would look like that of a 16-year-old boy for the foreseeable future.

With the state of the world being what it is, there's never been a better time to invest in your own gel manicure tools — especially if you're the type who likes to keep their nails perpetually polished. "Salons are opening and closing and opening and closing," says nail artist Tom Bachik. "It can be a difficult time to go to the salon and have your nails done." One of the beautiful things about pink is that there are almost endless shades and variations of it. Chose a youthful cotton candy or go vibrant with a bright pink that Barbie would be proud of. However, for ladies who are keen to make a bold declaration, why not try a fluoro hue, or perhaps a deep pink with plum undertones.
